Every day we live in the tension of spiritual warfare. That’s true, whether you’re engaged in it, or sitting on the sidelines.

Scripture reminds us that “our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against…the spiritual forces of evil” (Ephesians 6:12). The Enemy works tirelessly, but we are not without armor or allies. Christ has armed us with His Word, His Spirit, and His Church. The question is: are we vigilant, or are we sleeping on duty?

Be engaged! Here are a few things to incorporate into your ordinary ‘ol daily life. (BONUS: sure to check out the 1-minute motivational clip at the end of this article)

Pray throughout the day.
Regular contact with divine power is like barring the doors against the Enemy, and it strengthens and inspires you to holy attitudes. Scripture exhorts us to “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). The Enemy trembles when he finds a soul persevering in prayer. Short, sincere prayers—lifted from the heart—build a fortress of grace around your day.

Meditate on Scripture.
Meditate on scripture for a few minutes every day. the Enemy hates it when your imagination is filled with holy images. He can’t access your reason, but he can access your imagination, and he hates to find holiness there

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly” (Colossians 3:16). Even a few minutes spent filling your imagination with holy words and images drives away the influence of darkness. The Enemy cannot overcome a mind steeped in God’s Word. He’ll try! So stand firm. (continues below)

Fathers: You are the guard at the gate! Guard your family.
“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). Fathers, you’re the guard at the gate separating the Enemy from your family. “Stay sober and alert” maintaining virtue and healthy spiritual practices. If you falter, who will guard the gate? There’s no substitute for you, so man-up!

Call for Air Support; your heavenly allies.
“He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you in all your ways” (Psalm 91:11). Make friends with your guardian angel and draw strength from the saints who have gone before us, choosing at least one to be your personal ally (Mine is St. Anthony). They know the battle and stand ready to intercede.

Stay vigilant.
“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes” (Ephesians 6:11). The Enemy never rests—don’t let him find you sleeping!
